I have managed to get out a few times though, some of it coaching, some for personal fishing.
I took a trip to the River Itchen at Eastleigh just before Christmas with a chap called Graham who fancied a crack at the Grayling that reside there.
We set up a 15 foot float rod with a centrepin, large stick float to 4lb floating line and 3lb hooklink. Red maggots and corn were the baits for the day.
We spent a couple of hours with Graham learning to trot with a centrepin and getting the presentation right. After a while he was getting the hang of it and was starting to catch on a regular basis, nothing big, but a fish in these conditions is excellent.
Graham caught Grayling and Trout, losing more than he landed in the fast flowing water.
I spent the last 3 hours having a go myself, catching Grayling, Trout and Salmon. Overall a good day out with good company.
It was a long drive home but at least we were warm in the car!
