Northlands has a good head of pike and we have used it before, so were hopeful of a good day.
The evening before it decided to pour with rain for about 7 hours and the water level rose a foot overnight. This was not going to help matters, but we would persevere and see what happened.
I had 4 other coaches and 3 members of Essex PAC coaching on the day with 22 youngsters coming along to learn how to do it.
Though the lake was in a poor condition after all that rain, it still produced a few pike to low doubles.
The youngsters got to learn how to set up, make their own rigs, float fish and ledger fish and most importantly, how to handle pike safely.
Fish welfare is a major concern and Pike are very fragile, needing careful handling. It was great to see the lads getting into it and most of them showed great care and consideration in handling and unhooking the pike.
