A lot of the lakes have been covered in ice for days at a time, thawing out for a week then refreezing for a few days.
I did manage to get on a park lake for a few days piking though, 3 days with groups of students and a day with Ray from Ford Motors.
Though the conditions had been rather poor, by working hard it was still possible to get a result and all the lads caught pike to 11lb.
The day I sent with Ray had a cold and raw start, but gradually warmed up a bit throughout the day. We went over rigs, tactics, baits etc and set the gear up ready to start. Picking the spots Ray cast the baits out to likely holding areas.
We were looking to move baits on a regular basis. If Ray didn’t get a bite in 20 minutes, he was to move the bait a few feet and cover the water and see if he could land the bait on a fishes nose.
This proved to be a winning tactic with 2 pike caught literally minutes after moving a bait.
Unfortunately these were the only fish of the day, but at 11lb2oz and 11lb4oz I think Ray was happy enough with the results.
